You know, the ones that come in the little brown paper envelope that you add boiling water to? There was nothing I liked better as a kid than the Quaker Peaches and Cream Instant Oatmeal packets.<\/p>\n<p>As an adult, I know that those little packets aren&#8217;t the healthiest way to start my day. Oatmeal makes a great starter, but those are loaded in added sugars and other processed chemicals. The second ingredient, following oats, is sugar, and one little packet has 12 grams of sugar &#8212; that&#8217;s 3 teaspoons in that little bitty thing.<\/p>\n<p>This breakfast smoothie takes inspiration from the sweetness of this classic childhood breakfast in a healthier, clean eating recipe. Added sugar is kept to a minimum by using Icelandic skyr, a type of high-protein, low-sugar dairy product very similar to yogurt that happens to be absolutely delicious. Skyr is actually a cultured dairy product with the thick, custard-like consistency of strained yogurt but with a milder flavor. I think that&#8217;s why I prefer it &#8211; it&#8217;s less tangy, so it doesn&#8217;t need as much sugar to be palatable (at least to my taste buds).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a fan of Greek yogurt, give skyr a try. It&#8217;s even thicker than Greek, with a slightly higher protein content. It&#8217;s the only yogurt (or yogurt-like substance, since it&#8217;s apparently technically classified as a cheese) that I actually like the taste of without a bunch of nuts, berries, or granola to top it.<\/p>\n<p>This recipe uses skyr as the smoothie base, to add protein and just a little sweetness to mimic the syrupy sugary taste of its inspiration, that peaches and cream oatmeal. Adding oatmeal to smoothies makes it more filling with extra fiber and protein.
