Avoid a Pinterest Fail With Mini Oreo and Mini Nilla Wafer Leprechaun Gold
Make your own edible leprechaun pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow that your kids can find at the end of a leprechaun hunt and enjoy a sweet snack.
In less than an hour total (about 10 minutes of hands-on time in sum), you can transform miniature cookies into sparkling metallic leprechaun gold pieces.
You’ve seen the Pinterest picture of the edible-gold-sprayed Oreos, but does it work in real life? I put the edible gold spray to the test on two different types of cookies: mini Nilla Wafers and mini Oreos.
Did one work better than the other? I expected the Nilla Wafers should make the better product. Read on below for the results. Then get some cookies and get spraying.

Easy Leprechaun Gold Cookies: Tips and Tricks to Avoid a Pinterest Fail
Ingredients and Supplies:
- Parchment paper
- Wilton Color Mist edible spray in metallic gold, 1.5 oz
- 24 mini Nilla wafers
- 24 mini Oreos
- Individually wrapped Rolos candies (optional, for accent)
- Black plastic cauldron
Line your workspace with parchment paper to protect work surface from Wilton Color Mist spray. Lay 24 mini Nilla wafers (face down first) and 24 mini Oreos on parchment paper.
Shake Wilton Color Mist can well before spraying. Spray each cookie with 3 short blasts from about 3-4 inches away from the cookie. (Wilton recommends a minimum of 6 inches but I found color coverage to be inadequate from this distance.)
Allow cookies to dry to touch, about 5 minutes, before flipping cookies to spray opposite side.
After drying time, flip cookies back to first side to spray a second coat. Continue to dispense 3-4 short blasts at short-range distance directly on each cookie.
Between each coat, shake Wilton Color Mist can vigorously for best application. One can will have enough products for 48 mini cookies (assumes 3 coats for heavy coverage).
After two coats, make sure top of Nilla Wafers is facing up. Apply light third coat to cookies from distance of 6 inches, continuous spray, until can is empty. Discard can.
Allow cookies to dry completely, at least 15 minutes.
In my opinion, the Oreos came out better than the Nilla Wafers. I thought the dark color of the Oreos should be a drawback, but in fact, the dark color helps to make the metallic gold pop and be more visible. There is less noticeable difference in the Nilla Wafers.
Serve in plastic leprechaun pot o’ gold by mixing Nilla wafers and Oreos and accenting with gold foil-wrapped Rolos.
This quantity worked perfectly in the 5-inch cauldron in the set. Double or more the recipe if using the 8-inch cauldron.
Or incorporate the “coins” into a fun Leprechaun Bait Sweet Trail Mix – a crowd pleaser with my snack-loving boys.
