Did you eat Quaker Instant Oatmeal as a kid? You know, the ones that come in the little brown paper envelope that you add boiling water to? There was nothing I liked better as a kid than the Quaker Peaches and Cream Instant Oatmeal packets.
As an adult, I know that those little packets aren’t the healthiest way to start my day. Oatmeal makes a great starter, but those are loaded in added sugars and other processed chemicals. The second ingredient, following oats, is sugar, and one little packet has 12 grams of sugar — that’s 3 teaspoons in that little bitty thing.
This breakfast smoothie takes inspiration from the sweetness of this classic childhood breakfast in a healthier, clean eating recipe. Added sugar is kept to a minimum by using Icelandic skyr, a type of high-protein, low-sugar dairy product very similar to yogurt that happens to be absolutely delicious. Both Siggi’s and Icelandic Provisions are brands widely available in the yogurt section at most grocery stores.
I thought skyr was a type of yogurt, just like Greek, until I read more about it. Skyr is actually a cultured dairy product with the thick, custard-like consistency of strained yogurt but with a milder flavor. I think that’s why I prefer it – it’s less tangy, so it doesn’t need as much sugar to be palatable (at least to my taste buds).
If you’re a fan of Greek yogurt, give skyr a try. It’s even thicker than Greek, with a slightly higher protein content. It’s the only yogurt (or yogurt-like substance, since it’s apparently technically classified as a cheese) that I actually like the taste of without a bunch of nuts, berries, or granola to top it.
This recipe uses skyr as the smoothie base, to add protein and just a little sweetness to mimic the syrupy sugary taste of its inspiration, that peaches and cream oatmeal. Adding oatmeal to smoothies makes it more filling with extra fiber and protein. Just blend it a little longer to achieve a smooth and creamy texture.

Peaches and Cream Breakfast Smoothie
No Added Sugar | High Protein | Natural Ingredients | Clean Eating
Ingredients
- 1 banana, frozen (medium)
- 1 peach, chopped
- 1 5.3-oz container Icelandic skyr or Iceland-style yogurt, vanilla flavor
- 1/2 cup quick oats
- 2 Tbsp ground flax seeds
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
Instructions
-
Add all ingredients to blender or food processor.
-
Blend on high speed until desired consistency is reached.
Recipe Notes
- This makes 1 extra-large smoothie, perfect for a substantive breakfast or to share with your kids.
- Or divide into 2 for the right snack-size portion. Can be frozen and defrosted to drink later!
- You don't need to peel your peach before blending. I leave the skin on for extra fiber. You can't tell once it's all blended together.
- Depending on how large your banana and peach are, you may need to add another splash of almond milk to achieve a drinkable consistency.

My toddler grabbed this one off the countertop before I was even done photographing it. Like his mama, he loves his smoothies — but unlike me, I think it’s the color-changing straws that sells him on this healthy breakfast option. These BPA-free plastic reusable straws are a staple for smoothies and milkshakes in our house.
Let me know if you think this smoothie does justice to that nostalgic flavor of Quaker Peaches and Cream Instant Oatmeal using #NeverDoneWithFun!
